How to automate a print shop without replacing the printer
2026-09-08 · 8 min
Most shops do not fail because the printer is slow. They fail because every job is a conversation: file on WhatsApp, colour or B&W, how many, who paid, reprint or not.
Automation here means moving the routine jobs off the conversation. Special work — theses with comb binding, plotter drawings, passport photos — can stay at the counter.
Start by writing down the jobs you already price in your head: A4 B&W single, A4 duplex, colour, a minimum charge. Those become rules. Then confirm whether your current printer can be addressed as a queue from a small computer on the same network. If it cannot, software will not magically sit in front of it.
Put the QR where the customer already stands, not in the window facing the street. The first week is training: staff still help people scan. The win is not “no staff”. The win is staff not downloading other people’s assignments at 6pm.
